The Short List - June 2, 2011

  • Yemen's dissent into chaos continues as fighting rages on.  Al Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula (AQAP) have reportedly taken control of a second city in southern Yemen.

  • Violence along the AfPak border demonstrates the continued strength of militants in the area, even as the Pakistani government seems poised to launch an offensive a bit farther south.

  • Google is claiming the hackers based in China breached the Gmail accounts of hundreds of people in the U.S., including government and military officials.

  • President Obama met with several GOP lawmakers at the White House yesterday trying to find compromise on the debt ceiling issue.  Speaker Boehner doesn't think negotiations are going fast enough.  Rep. Ryan doesn't like that Democrats and the president are saying his plan will turn Medicare into a voucher program, even though that's exactly what it will do.  Meanwhile, the U.S. economy seems poised to party like it's 1938.

  • In Iowa it's Tim Pawlenty, less flashy(NYT) then the other guys.
